Why Does My Heat Pump Keep Freezing Up?

If you live in Virginia Beach, VA, and notice issues with your heat pump, it can be challenging when you don’t know what’s wrong. This is especially true if your heat pump freezes up often. There are several reasons why this can happen.

Air Filter Issues

Air filters trap particles such as pet dander and dust, but they can clog up if you don’t change them out on a regular basis. Clogging prevents airflow and traps moisture, so the filter doesn’t work properly, and your heat pump may freeze. It’s a good idea to check the air filters every month and change them at least quarterly.

Blower Motor Malfunction

When your blower motor isn’t working properly, it affects the rest of your system. The result could be the fan starting and stopping randomly as well as operate on a reduced spinning cycle. You may need to ask an HVAC expert to replace it.

Refrigerant Levels Too Low

A heat pump that is low on refrigerant or entirely empty may have a leak. Whether the solder joint is weak, you have a failed valve, or the fittings are loose, all can contribute to a freeze-up. Though this can have complex causes, an expert service tech can examine what’s going on and fix your heat pump.

Dirty Evaporator Coil

A dirty evaporator coil can’t do a good job of transferring heat. If you see that there’s ice on the evaporator coils, turn off your heat pump and reach out to an HVAC professional. Do not attempt to repair the problem yourself!

Heat pump issues can be serious, requiring expert maintenance and repairs. Don’t take any chances if you notice any of the above issues or simply find your heat pump freezing up. Contact our team at Hats Off Heating & Cooling, and you’ll be pleased with the results.
