Bo was absolutely wonderful in discussing everything with us for our tankless water heater. The crew that worked to take out of tank water heater, and install the tankless was heater were great as well. We couldn't have asked for a better experience with Hats Off Heating and Air Conditioning. We actually hired them to be our AC/Heat guys for all tuneups in the future even though we did like our previous company, Hats Off was just so personable, and it's nice to have the same company for everything. Thank you Bo, and Team for a great job, and a seamless experience.

I called Hats Off because they had great reviews and are family-owned. I had a clogged drain line from heat pump that needed to be resolved because the water pan overflowed and leaked through my ceiling. The technician, Evan, was very kind and walked me through everything he was doing including taking before/after pictures. He recognized the issue, cleaned out the line, and also recommended a safety switch to prevent the heat pump from continuing to run if the line gets clogged again. He was able to install the switch during the same visit. I appreciate their integrity and transformation. I was not left guessing about what was going on or what I was paying for. Thank you to Evan and Hats Off.

Common Causes of AC Issues

Air conditioners in Virginia Beach, VA, do more than just cool. The coastal humidity means your system is constantly pulling moisture out of the air on top of trying to keep your home cool. That added workload, combined with salt air exposure for homes closer to the water, can accelerate component wear and lead to problems that might not show up as quickly in drier climates.
Refrigerant leaks are among the most common issues we encounter. When the refrigerant is low, the system loses its ability to cool effectively and can eventually cause compressor damage if left unaddressed. Dirty or frozen evaporator coils are another frequent culprit, often the result of restricted airflow from a clogged filter or a coil that has not been cleaned in a while.
Electrical failures are something we see regularly as well. Capacitors, contactors, and wiring connections can all degrade over time, especially in humid coastal conditions where moisture can seep into places it should not. Drainage issues round out the list, since a clogged condensate drain can cause water to back up and shut the system down entirely. Whatever is going on with your system, our team can track it down and fix it properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost depends on the issue and the parts involved. We provide flat-rate pricing before any work begins, so there are no surprises. Most minor repairs are more affordable than people expect, and we will always let you know if a repair does not make financial sense compared to replacement.

This is often caused by low refrigerant, a dirty evaporator coil, or a failing compressor. In Virginia Beach’s humid climate, restricted airflow from a clogged filter can also cause the coils to freeze, resulting in complete cooling failure. A technician can quickly pinpoint the cause.

High humidity makes your AC work harder because it has to remove moisture from the air in addition to lowering the temperature. This additional strain can shorten component lifespans and lead to more frequent repairs if the system is not regularly maintained.

In many cases, yes. We stock common parts on our service vehicles and do our best to complete repairs in a single visit. We also offer emergency AC repair services for situations that cannot wait.

If your system is under 10 to 12 years old and the repair cost is reasonable, a repair usually makes more sense. If the system is older and repairs are adding up, replacement may be the better investment. Our technicians will give you an honest recommendation either way.
